Icarus
Once again I dip my toes into my favorite subject, Greek mythology. Icarus is a painting that plays a lot with the myth itself. By using simple symbols to remind us of the story. I would consider this to be one of my more minimal paintings. The bird is a symbol of fate, sitting and taking something from Icarus’ hand, reminding us of the notion of guidance and consequence. Under them a stream of teardrops fall, symbolizing water as well as the fateful fall Icarus took when he flew too close to the sun. This element reinforces all of the feelings of downfall and overstepping one’s own limits. The way Icarus sits reminds me a lot of a moment of contemplation, would we do the same things we chose to do if we knew what the results would be? Do you think that Icarus would still attempt to fly even if he knew of his downfall? I would like to think so. -Antonia xx
